Sicario: Day of the Soldado

Sicario - Day of the Soldado.png

Saw this movie with a friend and his adult son – we really enjoyed the first hour and a half.

Did not get the end, nor how Alejandro (played by Benicio Del Tor) and Isabel (played by Isabela Moner)  ended up back in Mexico.  The final scene was really weird and confusing.

Two things I’d recommend before seeing this movie – understand the definition of Sicario.  It’s basically a hitman or assassin.   And more importantly, see the first one of these movies that came out in 2015 called simply Sicario.  So I went into this movie never hearing that word before nor knew this was the second installment, thus I enjoyed all the action and story but missed what I believe to be a major storyline.

All that said, if you haven’t seen the first one, I would not recommend this.  If you have, got to judge for yourself.

Won’t you be my neighbor?

Won't You Be My Neighbor?.png

This was an interesting movie – basically a biography of the show that had over 1500 episodes (something I learned watching the movie-I had no idea it had that many).

There were a lot of things I didn’t know about the show that I did watch as a kid.   The issue with this movie is it had so many slow moments that I struggled to stay awake.   I did manage not to fall asleep and found it interesting.  I think people over 40 will enjoy this but I would wait until DVD/Blue Ray to see it.

They did a good job explaining where many of the main characters originated from.  I also was not aware that there was any controversary with the show – you learn about that in the show.

Because the movie seemed to never end and the only other documentary that I have to compare to recently was RBG which was really good, I’m only giving this a 4.  Again, if one is over 40 and curious enough about the show and it’s history, I think you’d enjoy it.  I don’t believe anybody under 40 will like this.

Superfly

SuperFly.png

A remake of Superfly from 1972 – This is about a very successful drug dealer in Atlanta and his conflict with the Snow Crew gang (wore all white), the police and the drug cartel.

I was very much looking forward to this movie.  Something different than I’m used to watching.  I brought my 16 year old son.  Big Mistake.   There was a long drawn out sex scene that I still can’t figure out what value it added to the plot.

Getting beyond that, the movie was interesting, I’m not really sure if I would call it entertaining.   There is nobody in my circle of friends that I think would enjoy this.  I did like a scene near the end where the cop and Youngblood Priest (main character played by Trevor Jackson) meet one last time.

The sex scene along with the ending and a few spots throughout this movie seemed to drag and drag.   I would not recommend this movie, it was however better than the two worst movies I’ve seen in the past twelve months (Father Figures and Proud Mary)

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom.png

I had high hopes for this, was a little disappointed but might be because of my expectations were too high.  I never fell asleep but I found a few parts to drag on too long and others happened too quickly.

Trying not to give anything away, the death of one of the characters was obvious that it was going to happen and then it just did.   The island’s destruction also happened pretty fast – I thought there might be more to that.  The movie was 2 plus hours so I understand their limitations.   I can think of a few scenes that were unnecessary to the story that they could have cut and added some more to the stuff I just mentioned.

One surprise that I thought was pretty cool was the granddaughters origin – Maisie (played by Isabella Sermon).  If you’ve seen the movie, you know what I’m talking about.  Many child actors are not that great.  I thought Isabella did a fantastic job.

I was a little disappointed, felt a little cheated at Jeff Goldblum’s lack of screen time.  His character was the same as last time (pretty cool) but where he was giving his “speech” was lame – they could have done a better job with that.

Chris Pratt was awesome as usual and although he didn’t have a big screen time, did have an important role, Henry Wu was great playing the geneticist that created all the dinosaurs.

If I was reviewing the first Jurassic Park movie, I’d probably give it a 9 out of 10, maybe higher.   If you were even a slight fan of that, you will enjoy this.

Incredibles 2

The Incredibles 2.jpg

I enjoyed this movie, wasn’t as good as the first one but still entertaining.  I was a little irritated that prior to the movie they showed a short film that was o.k. but I had no interest in seeing.   I recall them doing that in Coco as well – guess, I didn’t learn my lesson and forgot to show up late.

I did appreciate some of the main actors doing a little preview bit before the movie apologizing for taking so long to make a Incredibles 2.  The apology wasn’t necessary but it was kind of cool to then see the movie, recognize the voices and instead of questioning was that X or Y, I knew who they were.

The movie is basically about Mr. Incredible’s wife being the hero who saves the day along with some help from their kids.  Nothing too surprising – unlike many other animated movies, I did not fall asleep, story was good enough to keep me alert.  Not at the level of Finding Nemo or Frozen but a little better than Coco which I thought was pretty good.

Gotti

A black and white photograph of a man in a business suit. In bold orange text the tagline: He showed the world who's boss.

Based off the real life story of John Gotti.  This movie got blasted by Rotten Tomatoes, a zero rating by the “experts”, pretty good rating by the regular viewers.   I went into it with zero expectations and ended up enjoying it. Might have felt different if I had not heard about the “reviews”.

If you want to just escape the 95 degree weather we’re having in Cleveland and your kids under the age of 16 are doing something else this movie is worth seeing.  Otherwise waiting for it on DVD/Blu-Ray is fine.  I thought John Travolta did a good job.  I liked the actual clips of John Gotti that the film went to several times.  I do have to say that they made him out to be a better person than I understand he really was.  Folk hero type.

If you are going to see it, I’d recommend spending 10 minutes googling John Gotti and the “family”.   There were many references to different family members that I was not aware of, think it would have made it a little more interesting.   Also, don’t buy the largest pop – the movie is pretty long.

Tag

Tag (2018 film).png

Pretty funny movie based off a group of guys that have been playing Tag since they were in high school back in the 80’s.  Now, in their late 40’s they still continue the game during the month of May each year.

The five guys have all moved away from each other, followed different career and marriage paths but still each year surprise each other showing up at various events to “tag” each other.

Couple nights before I saw this movie, I watched three of the actors being interviewed on NBC nightly news;  Ed Helms (Andy from The Office), Jon Hamm (Don Draper from Mad Men) and Jake Johnson (Nick Miller from New Girl).  On one segment they had those three followed by the three real life guys they were playing in the movie.  Both interviews were hilarious.   Some of the stunts they pulled in real life to “tag” each other were unbelievable.   I can’t remember which two of the actors said this – “I think I’d enjoy being friends or hanging out with these guys in real life”.

Movie kind of reminded me of I, Tonya – an unbelievable real life story that if you didn’t know it actually happened, you wouldn’t believe it.

I’m giving the movie a 6 out of 10 because it was pretty funny, not as good as Game Night but well worth seeing. If you miss in the theaters, it’s probably just as good on DVD/Blu-Ray.  I did see it with my 14 year old daughter – movie used the F word a bunch of times but beyond that, nothing that made it too uncomfortable.

Ocean’s 8

Another great movie to go along with 11, 12 and 13 – none of these and now this one have disappointed.  Ocean’s 11 and 12 still my favorite but this one is well worth seeing.  I like to call this a “fun” movie – not the greatest acting but I enjoyed and could see again.

I took my 16 year old son and 19 year old daughter.  My son and I see a ton of movies, my daughter maybe 15 or so movies this year – she said this was her favorite of the year.  She has not seen Deadpool 2 or Infinity Wars.

I would have no issue with my 14 year old daughter seeing it and I think it would be fine for any age.  I’m confident almost all females will enjoy it and most guys.   You do not need to see any of the previous Ocean’s to enjoy this.  There was a scene near the beginning where one of the old guys from the previous Oceans made an appearance and then the little Asian guy that could hide in anything had a pretty big role but I don’t recall any lines.

I’d recommend this movie

Hotel Artemis

Enjoyed this movie.   Pretty violent, not one to bring little kids.   Was a different type story that I can’t think of anything to compare with.  Jodie Foster was great and I don’t know his real name but her huge assistant was pretty awesome as well.

Takes place in future Los Angeles where the streets have gone to hell.  Jodie plays a nurse who takes care of very wealthy criminals.  Jeff Goldblum plays one of the criminals who needs care.  Sofia Boutella is not only very attractive but kicks the crap out of people.

I saw this movie the same night I saw Ocean’s 8 – I described to a friend of mine that Ocean’s 8 was a fun movie, this was a good movie, meaning I really thought the acting in this movie was very good.

I’d recommend this movie for all males over 16 – I believe most females would enjoy it as well. Again, not for young kids.

Avengers: Infinity War

I really liked this movie, one of the best Marvel movies in my opinion.   All except the last 6 minutes, first 150 excellent.

Again, can’t say what happened in the last 6 minutes as to not ruin the movie but I think a lot of people would say, what the @#$^$% was that all about.  If Marvel sticks with it and they don’t come back, damn, what a loss. If they do come back than does anytime that happens to a character does it really mean anything.  Hopefully if you’ve seen it, you know what I’m talking about.  My son tells me they do that in the comic books.   I don’t care, still disappointed with either way they go.

Having tried to avoid the spoiler, this movie had everything including the characters from the most recent Black Panther.  I loved Black Panther and really liked almost all of the other Marvel movies.  I’m not an avid fan of the Marvel movies and would a horrible person to ask where this character or that came from but I’ve seen pretty much all of them to really appreciate this movie.  If you haven’t seen at least Black Panther, one of the movies with Captain America and Guardian of the Galaxy movies, I think you’ll miss out on too much to really enjoy this movie.  If you have seen those, I think you’re going to love this.

It is a long movie, go to the bathroom before and don’t do what I did and get the largest pop the theater has.

If the ending didn’t happen like it and what that means for the future, I’d probably give this a nine.   Because I really like so many of those Marvel movies……., I’m giving it:
